Module 5 Accessing Publicly Available Data Sources

This module explains how to access publicly available data and statistics. We demonstrate various sources including the American Community Survey (ACS), Current Population Survey (CPS, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Our expectation is that you will know how to retrieve publicly available data and statistics.

Topic 1: American Community Survey (ACS)

This topic explains how to access data and statistics from the American Community Survey (ACS) from the US Census Bureau's website. We demonstrate various resources including geographic profiles, data.census.gov tables and maps, the Microdata Access Tool (MDAT), and the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Our expectation is that you will know how to retrieve statistics and data from the American Community Survey (ACS).

Topic 2: Current Population Survey (CPS)

This topic explains how to access data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) from the US Census Bureau and US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ websites. We demonstrate various resources including data tables, the Microdata Access Tool (MDAT), and the File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Our expectation is that you will know how to retrieve data from the Current Population Survey (CPS).
